The Mayhem Code

Every class starts here

  • We listen.Eyes on the coach, hands to ourselves.
  • We try.Effort counts more than getting it right the first time.
  • We show respect.Partners, coaches, parents and the mat.
  • We have fun.If they're not smiling, we're doing it wrong.

The whole class calls it out before the first drill, and it's the only discipline language we use. At the end of every class, a coach picks one kid who lived the Code during training.

Is this right for my kid?

Every kid walks in different

We coach the kid in front of us. Here's who usually shows up on day one.

The quiet one

Shy, hangs back, needs a win. We start with drills they can succeed at fast and build from there.

The high-energy one

Bouncing off the walls. Structure, clear rules and a place to burn it off the right way.

The one getting picked on

Learns to stay calm, get out of bad spots and set a boundary without starting a fight.

The athlete

Balance, grip, body control and grit that carry straight into football, soccer and wrestling season.

What we don't do

  • No hard sparring. Kickboxing contact is light, controlled and supervised.
  • No deep end. Contact is scaled to each kid's age, size and comfort.
  • No tough-guy culture. Respect for partners and coaches isn't optional.
What they learn

Three arts, one class

Kids train the same Mayhem Fighting System our adults do, taught at their level.

Jiu-jitsu

Escapes, holds and control on the ground, with no strikes. The most useful self-defense a kid can learn.

Contact: moderate

Wrestling

Stance, balance and takedowns. Builds strength, coordination and grit fast.

Contact: moderate

Kickboxing

Footwork and technique on pads and bags first. Sparring is light-contact and supervised.

Contact: light

Every kid is different. Coaches dial contact up or down for each one, and nobody gets pushed past what they're ready for.

A class, start to finish

Same shape, every class

Kids know what's coming, so they settle in fast. Water breaks are built in between blocks.

How they level up

Kids earn stripes and belts as they progress, and Nate, the same coach who runs our fight team, signs off on every promotion. Our in-house Mayhem Invitationals are where he does much of that assessing, so they're a big part of how kids level up, and a safe first taste of competition. We train no-gi, so belts mark progress rather than being worn in class.

Parent questions

What parents ask us

Will my kid get hurt?

Any sport has bumps, and martial arts is no different. We keep the risk low with partners matched by size, light-contact striking, close supervision and coaches who read each kid.

Isn't MMA too violent for kids?

Kids class is mostly grappling and technique, not fighting. The goal is a kid who stays calm under pressure and never needs to start a fight.

My kid has never done a sport. Is that okay?

Yes. No experience is needed. Most of our kids started from zero.

How does 10 days for $10 work?

Pay $10 and come to kids classes for 10 days. If it clicks, Mayhem Kids is $60 a month, or less with a 6- or 12-month plan.

Does my kid need gear?

Not to start. We have loaner gear. Down the road we recommend gloves and a mouth guard, plus an athletic cup for boys.

Is there a contract?

No. Memberships are month-to-month. If you'd rather lock in a lower rate, the 6- and 12-month prepaid plans save you one or two months.

Can I watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and watch.

What happens when they turn 12?

Around 12 they move into our main classes, which already have plenty of teens, so they're still training with kids their age. It's an easy step: same coaches, same system they've been learning since day one.

“The coaches are extremely patient with the younger kids.”
